Ultra Power / Export
Export a ChatGPT conversation
ChatGPT can email you a data export of your whole account, as a zip of HTML and JSON files, and it can take a while to arrive. What it will not do is hand you this one conversation, right now, as a file you can read. Ultra Power exports the chat you have open, or any set of chats you tick, as Markdown, plain text, JSON or PDF. The conversion happens in your browser.
The formats, and what each one is for
| Format | Good for |
|---|---|
| Markdown (.md) | Notes apps, Obsidian, a repo, anything that keeps headings and code blocks intact. |
| Plain text (.txt) | Reading anywhere, pasting into anything, no formatting to argue with. |
| JSON (.json) | Feeding a chat into your own script, with roles and message order preserved. |
| Sending to someone, or filing. Uses the browser's own Save as PDF, with margins and a page break per chat. | |
| Paper, or a PDF via your printer dialog. Same clean layout, none of the site chrome. |
There is no .docx. If you need a Word document, export Markdown or plain text and open it in Word, or print to PDF and let Word import that. Writing a real Word file properly means shipping a whole document library into the extension, and I would rather say what it does not do than pretend a rename is a converter.
One chat, or two hundred
- 1The chat you have open
Export chat… is in the sidebar toolbar. Pick a format, done. The file is named after the conversation.
- 2A selection
Tick as many chats as you like, then Export… on the selection bar. They are concatenated into one file, one section per conversation.
- 3A whole ChatGPT Project
Projects get their own entry point: download or copy every chat in the project as a single Markdown document. The entry point is in ChatGPT's own project menu, with our own button next to the project title as a fallback for the day they change that menu.
What the free plan gives you. Exporting the open chat and exporting a selection are free. A whole-project export on the free plan writes the first 3 chats of that project and tells you exactly how many more it left out, rather than refusing outright. Pro exports the whole project. Pricing is on the pricing page.
Where the text comes from
The extension reads each conversation through ChatGPT's own API, the same call the site makes when you open a chat, and converts it in the browser rather than scraping the rendered page. That matters for two reasons: a long chat exports in full rather than only the part that happens to be rendered, and nothing is sent anywhere. No server of ours sees a single message. There is no account and no telemetry, and the only host the extension talks to is chatgpt.com.
Export is also the sensible first move before a clear-out. Select the chats you are about to delete, export them to one Markdown file, then delete. Now the backlog is gone and the content is not.
