How to export a ChatGPT conversation

ChatGPT itself exports your whole account, not one chat: Settings, Data controls, Export data, and it emails you a link to a zip file. For a single conversation you have three practical options: copy and paste it, print it to a PDF, or use an extension that writes the chat straight to a file. Which one you want depends on whether you need the text, a document, or something a script can read.

The four routes, side by side

RouteYou getCatch
Data controls, Export dataYour entire account as a zip of HTML and JSONEmailed, not instant, and it is everything rather than this one chat
Copy and pasteThe text, into whatever you paste it inFormatting and code blocks arrive however the target app feels; long chats are a scrolling job
Print to PDFA PDF, from the browserThe raw page prints with the interface in it unless something restyles it first
An extensionMarkdown, plain text, JSON or PDF, one chat or manyYou are installing something that can read your conversations, so read the listing

ChatGPT's own export, step by step

  1. 1
    Profile menu, Settings, Data controls

The same tab that holds archived chats and Delete all chats. Path checked on 9 September 2026.

  2. 2
    Export data, then confirm

The export is prepared in the background and a download link arrives by email. It is not instant, and the link expires, so grab it when it lands.

  3. 3
    Open the zip

Inside is your account: conversations as HTML you can open in a browser, plus JSON. It is a backup, not a document you would send to anyone.

Worth doing once a quarter regardless of any extension. It is the only copy that exists outside OpenAI's servers, and a copy you made before deleting something is the only thing that can bring a deleted chat back.

Exporting one conversation, right now

  1. 1
    Open the chat

Any conversation, however long. The extension reads it through ChatGPT's own API rather than off the screen, so nothing depends on how much of it has been scrolled into view.

  2. 2
    Export chat, then a format

Markdown (.md), Plain text (.txt), JSON (.json), PDF (Save as PDF) or Print…. The file takes the conversation's own title as its name.

  3. 3
Or take a whole set at once

Tick as many chats as you like and export the selection into one file, one section per conversation. A whole ChatGPT Project exports as a single Markdown document from the project's own menu.

Which format for what

There is no .docx. If the destination is Word, export Markdown or plain text and open that, or go through PDF. Writing a real Word file means shipping a document library into the extension, and a renamed text file is not a converter.

What about the share link?

ChatGPT can create a public link to a conversation, and people reach for it as an export. It is not one. It is a page hosted by OpenAI, readable by anyone who has the address, that stops existing the moment you delete the link, and shared links are their own list in Data controls worth auditing occasionally. If you want a copy you control, take a file.

Privacy, since this involves reading every message

Any tool that exports a conversation has to read that conversation. Ultra Power converts it in your browser and sends it nowhere: no account, no server of ours, no analytics. The only host it talks to is chatgpt.com, with your own session, exactly as the site does. That is a claim you can check in the extension's listing and its permissions rather than take on trust.
