Ultra Power / Guides / Export to PDF
How to export a ChatGPT conversation to PDF
Two ways, and the difference is what the PDF looks like. Press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on a Mac) and choose Save as PDF, and you get the conversation with the interface printed around it. Or use an extension that swaps in a print stylesheet first, and you get a clean document with margins, no sidebar, and a page break between conversations if you exported several at once. Both use the browser's own PDF engine, so neither uploads anything.
The clean version
- 1Open the conversation
Or tick several in the sidebar if you want them in one document.
- 2Export chat, then PDF (Save as PDF)
Ultra Power reads the conversation through ChatGPT's own API, lays it out with a print stylesheet, and hands it to the browser's Save as PDF dialog.
- 3Save
Margins are set, the interface is gone, and each conversation starts on its own page. A single chat is named after the conversation.
There is no PDF library involved and nothing is rendered on a server. The browser does the same job it does for any web page, on markup written for paper instead of for a screen.
The no-extension version, and its problems
Ctrl+P on chatgpt.com works, and for a short chat it is fine. On a long one, expect three things:
- Only what is loaded gets printed. ChatGPT renders a long conversation in pieces as you scroll. Print without scrolling to the top and you are printing a fragment.
- The interface comes with it. Sidebar, composer and buttons all land in the PDF unless the site's own print styles happen to catch them.
- Code blocks get cut. A wide block that scrolls sideways on screen is truncated on paper rather than wrapped.
If you do go this route, scroll to the very top of the conversation first, wait for the whole thread to load, then print. And check the preview before saving: the page count tells you quickly whether you got the whole thing.
Several conversations in one PDF
Tick the chats you want, export the selection as PDF, and they are concatenated into one document with a section per conversation and a page break between them. That is the format for archiving a project's worth of chats, or for handing a client the research that sat behind something.
On a phone
Browser extensions do not run in the ChatGPT mobile apps. Open the conversation in the phone's browser instead, then use the share or print sheet and pick Save to PDF. Same caveat as above: scroll the whole conversation first.
Questions
Do the images in a chat come through?
Printing the page directly captures whatever the page has rendered, images included. If you want the images themselves rather than a document, ChatGPT's own Library (in the sidebar) collects every image and file across your chats and downloads a selection in one go, which is the better tool for that job.
Is PDF export free?
Yes, for the chat you have open and for a selection. The cap on the free plan is on bulk actions, 25 chats per action, and on a whole-ChatGPT-Project export, which writes the first 3 chats and tells you how many it left out. Full detail on the pricing page.
Can I get a Word file instead?
Not directly. Export Markdown or plain text and open that in Word, or import the PDF. There is no .docx writer in the extension and I would rather say so.
