Ultra Power / Guides / Recover deleted chats
Can you recover deleted ChatGPT chats?
No. If you deleted a conversation in ChatGPT, it is gone, and nothing on this page will bring it back. There is no recycle bin, no undo, and support cannot restore it either. But a lot of people asking this question did not delete their chat, they archived it, and an archived chat comes back in about ten seconds. So start by working out which one you are actually looking at.
Deleted or archived? They look identical from the sidebar
Both make a chat vanish from your list. That is the whole confusion, and it is worth 30 seconds to check before you accept the bad answer.
| State | What happened | Can you get it back? |
|---|---|---|
| Archived | Hidden from the sidebar, kept in your account. | Yes. Unarchive it and it returns, whole. |
| Deleted in ChatGPT | Destroyed. The conversation id stops resolving. | No. Not by you, not by support. |
| Deleted with Ultra Power | Archived into the extension's trash first. | Yes, until the restore window closes. |
How to check the archive
Open ChatGPT's settings, then Data controls, then Archived chats, and press Manage (step by step here). If the conversation is listed, unarchive it and it goes straight back to your sidebar with its full history, in its original position. ChatGPT shuffles this control between redesigns, so search the settings pages for the word "archived" rather than trusting anyone's exact click path, this one included.
Nothing in the archive? Then it was deleted, and the next section is the bad news.
What deleting actually does
Ask ChatGPT's own backend for a conversation you removed a minute ago and it answers
404 conversation_deleted, can_retry false. That is the API the website itself uses,
telling you the record is gone and that retrying will not help. OpenAI's documentation says
deleted conversations are removed from their systems within 30 days, aside from copies they are
obliged to keep for security or legal reasons, and those are not copies anyone will hand back to
you.
The list of things that can still work is short, and every item on it depends on a copy you already had:
- A data export you requested before deleting. ChatGPT can email you a zip of your account's conversations. If you asked for one while the chat still existed, the text is in there. Requesting one now only exports what is left.
- A tab you have not reloaded. If the conversation is still open in another window or on another device that has not refreshed, the page is holding text the server no longer has. Copy it out now, before anything reloads.
- Your workspace admin, on a Business or Enterprise plan. Retention there is set by the workspace, not by you, so it is worth one message to whoever administers it. On a personal account there is nobody to ask.
That is it. Anything promising to undelete a ChatGPT conversation without one of those is guessing, or selling you something.
Making sure it does not happen twice
This is the part you can actually control, and it is why I built the extension in the first place. Deleting one chat at a time through ChatGPT's menu is slow enough that people put off the clean-up, then do it in one furious pass and lose something in the middle of it. So make the delete reversible, and the furious pass stops costing anything.
- 1Delete into a trash, not into the void
With Ultra Power, Move to trash takes the chats out of your list immediately and holds them in a trash you can read: 12 hours on the free plan, 7 days on Pro. Restore puts one back, or Undo reverses the whole batch, even after a reload.
- 2Export what you might want later
Select the chats you are about to clear and export them to one Markdown, text, JSON or PDF file first. Then the backlog goes and the content stays.
- 3Archive when you are unsure
Archiving is ChatGPT's own reversible option and the extension does it in bulk too. If you are tidying rather than deleting for privacy, archive is the safer verb.
Being straight about the trade-off. While a chat sits in Ultra Power's trash it is archived in your OpenAI account rather than deleted. That is what makes restoring it possible, and it means a trashed chat is not yet gone from OpenAI's side. If you are deleting for privacy rather than tidiness, open the trash and use Delete now, which is immediate and final, the same as ChatGPT's own delete.
Next time, get it back with one click

Can OpenAI support restore a deleted conversation?
No. The record is deleted, so there is nothing on their side to switch back on. Support can help with billing, access and account issues. A deleted chat is not one of them.
I deleted it on my iPhone. Is it different on the app?
No. The conversation lives in your account, not on the phone, so deleting it in the iOS or Android app deletes it everywhere at once. Archived chats are reachable from the app's settings the same way they are on the web, and the same check applies: if it is in the archive it comes back, if it is not, it is gone.
Does clearing my browser history or reinstalling the app change anything?
No, in either direction. Your chats are stored in your OpenAI account, so clearing browser data never deletes them and reinstalling never brings them back. The one exception is what an extension keeps locally: Ultra Power's trash, folders and notes live in your browser, so clearing site data or removing the extension takes those with it.
If I delete ChatGPT history, is it gone forever?
From your side, yes, immediately. On OpenAI's side, their documentation says deleted conversations are removed within 30 days, apart from copies kept for security or legal reasons. Both things are true at once: you cannot get it back, and "deleted" does not mean the bytes evaporated the same second everywhere.
Is there a ChatGPT recycle bin coming?
Not that OpenAI has announced. Archive is the closest thing they ship, and it is a different promise: it hides a chat instead of deleting it. Everything else has to sit in front of the delete, which is what the extension's trash does.
