Ultra Power / Guides / Gone forever?

If you delete ChatGPT history, is it gone forever?

From your side: yes, immediately, and there is no way back. From OpenAI's side: mostly, on a delay, with exceptions that turned out to matter. Their documentation says deleted conversations are removed from their systems within 30 days, apart from copies they are required to keep for security or legal reasons, and since 2025 a court case has made that exception real rather than theoretical. Both halves are true at once, and the practical takeaway is simple: deleting is permanent for you and is not a privacy eraser.

What deleting actually does

The conversation leaves your account in that second. Ask ChatGPT's own backend for it and you get 404 conversation_deleted, can_retry false. Nobody can restore it: not you, not support. That part is absolute, which is why the recovery question has such a short answer.

Then a deletion clock starts on their infrastructure. The best you can say about the end of that clock is "within 30 days, unless something requires them to keep a copy".

Why people started saying to delete your ChatGPT history

This search term did not appear out of nowhere. It tracks a specific court case, and the timeline matters more than the headlines did. What follows is reported, dated, and worth checking at the sources rather than taking from a page trying to sell you an extension.

WhenWhat happened
May 2025In the New York Times copyright case, a court ordered OpenAI to preserve output log data that would otherwise have been deleted. In practice: deleted chats were being retained because a judge said so. OpenAI objected publicly.
October 2025That going-forward preservation obligation was lifted, reported as effective from late September 2025. Data already preserved stayed preserved, and accounts flagged in the case were carved out.
November 2025The court ordered OpenAI to hand over a sample of roughly 20 million de-identified conversation logs to the plaintiffs. OpenAI challenged it and lost.
January 2026The first wave of those logs was reported as delivered to the plaintiffs' lawyers.
July 2026The publishers filed a motion alleging OpenAI had deleted or compressed conversations covered by the earlier preservation order. Contested, unresolved at the time of writing.

Sources worth reading in full: OpenAI's own statement on the data demands and Engadget on the preservation order being lifted. This page was written on 9 September 2026 and the case is still moving.

What that means for you, practically

Three settings that do more than deleting

Where Ultra Power sits in this, stated straight. Its trash works by archiving a chat rather than deleting it, and only deletes for real when the window closes. That is what makes an undo possible, and it means a trashed chat is still in your OpenAI account meanwhile.

So for a privacy clear-out, do not use the window: open the trash and press Delete now, which deletes immediately, exactly like ChatGPT's own delete. The extension itself keeps chat titles, folders and notes in your browser only, contacts no server of ours, and has no analytics or telemetry of any kind.

Common questions

Does deleting my chats stop them being used for training?

Not retroactively, and that is the wrong lever anyway. The lever is the training toggle in Data controls, which governs what happens from the moment you switch it off.

Could my deleted conversations end up in a court case?

Conversations preserved under the 2025 order were sampled and produced to the plaintiffs' lawyers in de-identified form, under protective conditions. That is the actual precedent, and it is a reason to think about what you type rather than a reason to panic about what you delete.

Is archiving as private as deleting?

No. An archived chat is hidden from your sidebar and fully intact in your account. It is the right tool for tidiness and the wrong one for privacy.

If I delete my whole account, is it different?

Account deletion is a stronger action than clearing chats and it is permanent and unrecoverable, with the same legal-hold caveat. It lives in the account settings, not in Data controls.
