Ultra Power / Guides / Delete your history

How to delete your ChatGPT history

There are three routes, and ChatGPT only ships two of them. One chat at a time, from the menu on the row in your sidebar. Everything at once, from Settings, then Data controls, then Delete all chats. Or in batches, which needs an extension because ChatGPT has no multi-select. All three are permanent: nothing you delete in ChatGPT can be undone, by you or by support.

One chat

Hover the chat in the sidebar, open the menu on the row, choose Delete, confirm. It is gone in that second. Fine for one. For forty it is forty menus and forty confirmations, which is why most people never actually do the clean-up they keep meaning to do.

All of it

  1. 1
    Profile menu, Settings

The avatar at the bottom of the sidebar, or the same avatar in the mobile app.

  2. 2
    Data controls

This tab holds shared links, archived chats, Archive all chats, Delete all chats and Export data. Path checked on 9 September 2026.

  3. 3
    Delete all chats

Confirm, and your history is cleared. There is no recycle bin behind it and no undo. Treat this button the way you would treat formatting a drive.

Consider Archive all chats instead, if the goal is a clean sidebar. It sits directly above Delete all in the same tab, empties your list just as thoroughly, and every chat stays recoverable from Archived chats. Delete all is the right button only when you actually want the conversations gone.

The bit in the middle: a few hundred, but not everything

This is the case ChatGPT has no answer for. You want the 300 throwaway chats gone and the twenty that matter kept, and the site gives you a choice between one-at-a-time and all-of-it.

  1. 1
    Tick, or select all

Ultra Power puts a checkbox on every chat. Shift-click takes a range. Select all reaches every chat in your history, not only the ones the sidebar has drawn, because the extension keeps its own local index.

  2. 2
    Read before you commit

Click into any chat to check what it is and untick it. The selection is held by the extension, so it survives previewing, navigating and a full reload.

  3. 3
    Move to trash

They leave your list immediately and stay restorable for 12 hours, or 7 days on Pro. Delete now in the trash skips the window when you want something gone straight away.

About three seconds per chat is ChatGPT's own API speed, and the extension runs a batch of them in parallel, so a couple of hundred takes roughly a minute while you get on with something else. Free covers 25 chats per action, which is a real cap rather than a trial: 300 chats is twelve actions, or one on Pro.

Three things people expect deleting to do, and it does not

On iPhone and Android

The same account, so the same history and the same routes: delete a single chat from its own menu in the app, and the app's settings carry the same Data controls. Deleting on your phone deletes everywhere, immediately, and there is no separate phone-only copy to clear. Bulk selection is a browser thing: extensions do not run in the mobile apps, so a big clean-up is a desktop job.

Not creating history in the first place

ChatGPT has a temporary chat mode that keeps a conversation out of your history entirely. For the one-off question you would delete afterwards anyway, that is less work than deleting it, and it never shows up in your sidebar to be cleaned up later.

Clear the history you meant to clear

Checkboxes, shift-range select, select all across your whole history, and a trash so a mistake costs a click.

Add to Chrome Free up to 25 chats per action. Chrome 120 and up.
